The Wedding Night ... Dean Martin Style
Here is another wedding-related video. This one comes from the classic DEAN MARTIN SHOW. A few things struck me while watching this very funny scene:
DEAN really likes to drink! Wow! Looking back on this sketch and several others, it is quite funny how obvious it is that the man is pretty sloshed during many of his monologues and scenes with others. He slurs a lot of words, often times saying things incorrectly, putting the syllable in the wrong place, and sometimes even saying the wrong line completely! It is also funny how different comedy was back then; the things that WERE acceptable versus the things that weren't. For example, on TV sitcoms like "I Love Lucy" and "The Dick Van Dyke Show," married couples had seperate beds, and you couldn't talk about getting pregnant. Yet, on the "Dean Martin Show," the host and many of his guests can feel free to smoke cigarettes, drink alcohol in the middle of a scene, and treat women as sex objects freely in their style of dialogue and comedy. None of this was considered rude, it was just the way things were. The interesting thing is that even when Dean is drunk or is clearly looking at the Q card for his next line, the sketches still work and are very funny. I love watching old shows like this and noticing what people found funny back then, and what we find funny today. Back then, there are so many great one liners, and such a sense of "male bonding" especially on shows like this one.
In this sketch, Jimmy Stewart is the guest. He and his wife Shirly are at a hotel on their wedding night. The bellboy enters, (Dean Martin) and the comedy ensues! If you are of the older generation, this will being back great memories. And if you are younger, this is a perfect opportunity to see and hear some of the classics from days gone by. Either way, enjoy!
