Excuse me, this costs HOW much?

POSTED BY Kelley Lynn, 18 September 2007

Have you ever noticed that the word WEDDING is a magic word? As in, whenever you say it to someone, you get an instant reaction. Sometimes negative, other times positive. When speaking with any kind of vendor or salesperson; anyone offering a service, using the word WEDDING can suddenly quadruple the price of something instantly! I remember trying to plan our rehearsal dinner at a nice restaurant, and speaking with the banquet managers and others in charge of such events. A typical conversation involved me asking what their price ranges were on their dinner menus, and them telling me something like $8-$12 per entree. Okay, fine. Then I happened to mention the word's "rehearsal dinner," and the tone changed immediately. "Oh, you're getting married?" Why yes I am. Now those same dinner prices just jumped from $8-$12 per entree to a special "wedding menu" that, strangely, only included meals starting at the low price of $20 per person. Well, ain't that just a trip? So over time, I learned a valuable lesson. Do not mention the word WEDDING and you will save a TON of money. Honest. I experimented with this by calling companies twice; the first time just asking for their typical fees for services, and the second time starting out by saying "I'm getting married, and I'm looking for a car service." Well, wouldn't you know it? Those second price lists were a lot higher. So I learned, and now I pass it on to you. Whenever possible, leave out the magic word. To further illustrate this point, and to make you laugh, here is a hilarious video clip that comes from the British sketch comedy show "Man Strokes Woman" on the BBC network. I found this on www.Youtube.com and it is a guaranteed laugh out loud.

So what about you, dear readers? Have you been screwed over by "the industry" when mentioning the magic word? What did you do about it?

I once told a venue that I was planning a wedding, got the inflated prices - then had my cousin call and say it was for a family reunion - the price was HALF of what they would charge me. so I decided to sign the contracts as a reunion and later tell them that we decieded since everyone was already coming - we should go ahead and use that date and venueto be married. Would have worked if I had not found out there was no room for a band. Limos - forget it - just rent for the minimum time and have the one car do both Wedding Party trips to the ceremony venue and take the couple to the reception - the WP can ride with their significant others. The moment the vendors say they have a 'wedding package' - I cringe.
